Interview with Pro Surfer Camilla Kemp

SWOX Athlete Camilla Kemp: Camilla Kemp is a professional surfer from Cascais, Portugal, with a unique blend of German and Portuguese heritage. Over the past 16 years, she’s built an impressive career, honing her skills on the powerful waves of Praia do Guincho, her home break. Known for her dynamic surfing style and signature layback snaps, Camilla brings both grace and power to the water. She rides her Sharpeye 5.8 Inferno 72 board, which she swears by for its speed and control—qualities that mirror her approach to life and competition.

With a career that spans almost two decades, Camilla’s dedication to her craft is unwavering. But it’s not just about personal achievements for her. She’s deeply passionate about inspiring others through surfing, showing that the ocean isn’t just a competitive arena but a source of joy, freedom, and personal growth.

SWOX: You’ve been surfing for 16 years now. What keeps you motivated?

CAMILLA: Honestly, the ocean itself is my biggest motivator. Every wave, every session is different, and that keeps things exciting. There’s always something new to learn. I also draw a lot of inspiration from the people around me. Whether it’s my fellow athletes or just people who are incredibly dedicated to their own paths, their passion pushes me to work harder and constantly strive for greatness. I’ve learned that you can always push your limits, and that’s what keeps me going every day.

SWOX: You’ve mentioned how much other athletes inspire you. If you could surf with any two athletes, who would they be, and where?

CAMILLA: I’d love to surf with Aryna Sabalenka and Cristiano Ronaldo. Aryna’s fierce determination on the tennis court is something I really admire, and Ronaldo’s work ethic is legendary. I think their energy would be amazing to have in the water! As for where we’d surf, I’d pick o2 Surftown Munich. It’s a totally different vibe—surfing in an artificial wave pool in the middle of a city—but it would be an awesome way to mix sports and fun.

SWOX: You have some exciting goals for 2024/25. Can you tell us more?

CAMILLA: My biggest goal is to become the German national champion again, but beyond that, I’m setting my sights on something even bigger—qualifying for the Olympics in LA 2028. It’s a long road, but I’m fully committed to the journey. I’m training hard, pushing myself in every session, and working to refine both my physical and mental game. The idea of representing my country on that stage is a huge motivator for me.

SWOX: Your approach to life seems so balanced. Can you share your personal philosophy?

CAMILLA: Balance is everything for me, both in and out of the water. I believe in staying active, eating well, and keeping a positive mindset. Surfing teaches you so much about patience, resilience, and being present, and I try to apply that to every aspect of my life. Life is too short not to enjoy it, so I focus on making the most of each day—whether that’s during a tough surf session or just having a good time with friends.

SWOX: Do you have a mantra or quote that keeps you grounded during tough times?

CAMILLA: One of my favorites is, “Life is like surfing; you can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to ride them.” It reminds me that challenges are inevitable, but it’s how you respond that matters. Every wave is an opportunity, whether it’s in the ocean or in life, and it’s all about riding those waves with confidence and grace.

SWOX: What role does SWOX play in your surfing journey?

CAMILLA: SWOX has been a game-changer for me. As someone who spends so much time in the sun and saltwater, taking care of my skin is super important.
